Hobbits and Catholics

Posted on January 4, 2011April 20, 2012 by GESS

While searching for a synonym on www.dictionary.com, I was distracted by an article about hobbits. (I’m easily distracted in a dictionary , in print or online. Is that DADD: dictionary attention deficit disorder?)

While reading about hobbits, I was distracted by a link about the meaning of the initials JRR.

While learning Tolkien’s names, I spotted a link to Tolkien books at www.catholiccompany.com.

What’s with the Catholics and Tolkien? I wondered.

According to the folks at www.catholiccompany.com, “J.R.R. Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic and successful high fantasy British writer. J.R.R. Tolkien manages to take his readers into the depths of the imagination with made up languages, places and characters yet still remains expressly Catholic in all his ideals and theories. The works of J.R.R. Tolkien have become literary classics and have even spawned feature films.”

“Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic” Who knew?!

“remains expressly Catholic in all his ideals and theories” Huh? Hidden Catholic message in the novels?
