My grandmothers could do anything with Kool-Aid.
All of them. Rainbow cake, Jell-o molds, pancake syrup, party punch for children and adults; anything.
My all-time favorite Grandma Kool-Aid creation has always been kubies. They’re a chilly, yummy treat; perfect for hot summer afternoons. Plus, they are so easy to make that children can make them for themselves.
First, mix Kool-Aid according to the package directions. Then pour the beverage into the sections of an ice cube tray. Add two or three fruits from a can of fruit cocktail to each cube. Freeze!
Soon you have the best ice cubes ever made. They liven up a plain glass of water, or cool and flavor a cup of tea. They’re sweet to suck on, refreshing to swallow, and have a chewy treat inside.
My grandmothers should have made a cookbook of Kool-Aid recipes; appetizers, salads, drinks, and desserts. If they had, maybe I would have worked up the courage to share the kubies recipe I learned in college with them. Probably not, though. None of them are fond of vodka.
